In this artwork Madame Roulin is holding a rope which she used to rock the baby cradle as she was rocking in her chair. Van Gogh painted numerous portraits of the Roulin Family while he lived in Arles France. He and Joseph Roulin became friends, but Madame Roulin never cared for Van Gogh.
