A Museum Quality Art Print of the Boatyard at Put in Bay Ohio for sale by Brandywine General Store. Put in Bay derived its name from the schooners who plied these waters in the last part of the 1700s. When they were sailing on Lake Erie and bad weather would arrive, they would put in at this bay to wait out the storms on the lake. Put in Bay township was established in 1830 but the island remained sparsely populated for years. The first white settler on the island was Alexander Ewen in 1810, who owned around 1,000 hogs that he let roam wild on the island. The bay, located in Lake Erie, played an important role in the War of 1812 when US Naval Commander Oliver Hazard Perry sailed from the port on September 10, 1813 to engage a British squadron just North of the island in the Battle of Lake Erie. Today the main employer on the island is the tourist trade, as thousands of tourists arrive here each year, mainly by boat. In this picture you can see many such boats, the Boardwalk, pier and the village itself. All combine together to make a nice nautical scene themed print. Picture #244 an original archival photographic print
