Kessel, a versatile painter of still life artworks, was from Antwerp. He is best known for small paintings on copper upon which he would paint various insects, shells and flowers similar to this work. This small masterpiece dates from the period around 1650 - 1654, it is believed that these small works of art on copper plate were actually painted fronts for small drawers in a cabinet. We have added an antique black border around this print, we think making it look better and also more how it would have looked with the framing of a cabinet door around it, as originally intended.
