Archival art print of Johan Christian Dahl's Eruption of the Volcano Vesuvius, painted in oil on canvas in 1823. When Vesuvius erupted again in 1820, Dahl was among the first to make the ascent, climbing the active volcano to observe and sketch the spectacle firsthand. The resulting work carries the authority of direct witness — the heat, the billowing smoke, and the raw force of the eruption rendered with an immediacy that sets it apart from the many studio-imagined Vesuvius paintings of the era. Paintings of the volcano were enormously fashionable in the early nineteenth century, as patrons sought dramatic visual records of natural and historical events. Dahl's version stands among the most compelling, grounded as it is in his own experience on the crater's rim.
