Archival art print of Johan Christian Dahl's Birch Tree in a Storm, executed in oil on paper laid on cardboard in 1849. The original measures 8½ by 7 inches — a small work of concentrated power. The solitary, windswept birch draws on a tradition stretching back to Jacob van Ruisdael's seventeenth-century tree studies, which were themselves shaped by Allart van Everdingen, the first painter to bring Norway's wild scenery to a wider European audience. Dahl painted this as a variant of a larger composition from the same year, both works rooted in a nature study he had made in Germany in 1823. Though drawn from a German sketch, the intent is unmistakably Norwegian — the birch bending against the storm a symbol of Romantic resilience and the untamed northern landscape.
