Archival art print of The Palace of Fine Arts by Edwin Deakin, an oil on canvas completed in 1915. The building was designed by Bernard Maybeck for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco’s Marina District, drawing on Roman and Greek architectural forms to evoke a romantic, fictional ruin. A 1,100-foot pergola curves around a central rotunda set beside an artificial lagoon, allowing the structure to reflect in the water below. It is the only original Exposition building remaining on its site — saved during the fair itself by a preservation league led by Phoebe Apperson Hearst — and was fully rebuilt in 1965, with seismic retrofit and lagoon restoration completed in 2009.
