Johan Christian Dahl - Burning Windmill in Stege Art Print
Brandywine General Store
Archival art print of Johan Christian Dahl's Burning Windmill in Stege, painted in oil on canvas in 1856. The scene is set at Stege, the principal town on the Danish island of Møn in southeast Denmark — once a prosperous herring port, in Dahl's time still a working harbour overlooked by windmills on the surrounding hills. The windmill is fully ablaze, flames erupting from its crown, while below on the road a wagon races toward the water and a figure on the hillside has already reached the site — both arriving too late. Across the water, tall sailing ships ride at anchor in the calm harbour, indifferent to the crisis unfolding on shore. The contrast between the tranquil town and the violent, luminous fire gives the composition its tension.
