Archival quality art print of Aurora Borealis, painted in 1865 by Hudson River School master Frederic Edwin Church. Monumental in scale at 56 × 83 inches, the original hangs in the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. The composition was based on field sketches by Arctic explorer Isaac I. Hayes, Church's former pupil, who witnessed the phenomenon firsthand. A lone ship sits adrift in a desolate frozen seascape, a jagged mountain range looming behind it, while the sky blazes with the uncanny reds and yellows of the Northern Lights. Completed at the close of the American Civil War, the painting is widely interpreted as a symbol of Union triumph — the celestial light breaking through darkness over a world remade.
