The Dragon and the Little Bear

Follow Draco and Ursa Minor across a historical star chart in this constellation art print. Draco is the Dragon, a winding constellation that contains the Cat’s Eye Nebula; Gamma Draconis, also called Eltanin, is its brightest star. Nearby, Ursa Minor is the Little Bear and includes the familiar Little Dipper star pattern.

At the end of the Little Bear’s tail is Polaris, the North Star, which sits close to the north celestial pole and has long helped skywatchers find north. Ursa Minor was among the constellations cataloged by the second-century astronomer Ptolemy.

This image comes from card #1 of Urania’s Mirror, a set of 32 astronomical cards published in London in 1825 to help people learn the night sky. Associated with Jehoshaphat Aspin, it makes a fitting companion for a study or gallery wall. Available as a premium-quality archival art print by Brandywine General Store.
