The original oil on canvas now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC. Edith Jones Wharton who lived from 1862 - 1937, was the most celebrated woman author of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She was the youngest child born to a wealthy New York couple. she led an exciting and pampered life, winters in Paris, summers in Newport, Rhode Island and elegant dinner parties and the high society life in New York City. By the age of 16 she had written her first novel and published several poems. Wharton preferred Europe to New York and spent much of her adult life in France. Her Pulitzer winning novel Age of Innocence was published in 1920, this book was a critical depiction of New York's upper class. Famous people art print #47
