Waikiki is Hawaiian for spouting fresh water, which comes from the many springs that are in what used to be wetlands. This is one of the most famous beaches in the World, the two mile stretch of white sand is fronted by hotels and tourist facilities and deep blue water on the other side. The neighborhood of Waikiki extends from the Ala Wai Canal, which was dug to drain the former wetlands, on the west and north to Diamond Head on the East. This was a retreat for Hawaiian royalty in the 19th century, who enjoyed surfing here on early forms of longboards. Picture #21
