A Museum Quality Print of War or the Ride of Discord by Henri Rousseau. The original size of this oil on canvas is 195 by 114 centimeters and now hangs at the Musee d'Orsay in Paris France, being purchased by them in 1946. In this allegorical artwork by Rousseau which the artist completed in 1894, War is portrayed as a wild woman in white, riding a black horse, galloping through a desolate landscape which is strewn with butchered bodies. All color and life are drained out of everything, leaving only death and destruction. War is carrying a flaming torch and bare sword. Rousseau depicts the horse as one of the four ridden by the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse from the Book of Revelation in the Bible. It is thought this allegory represented Rousseau's memories of the Franco - Prussian War and the violent repression of the Paris Commune.
