An archival premium Quality Art Print of The Abduction of Proserpina by Rembrandt for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist painted this oil on oak panel in 1631, with the size of the original artwork being 33 by 31 inches and now hangs in a museum in Berlin Germany. Proserpina was the daughter of Zeus, the Ruler of the Universe and Demeter, the Earth Mother. Demeter controlled the seasons and Nature. Proserpina grew into a beautiful woman and was hidden away by her mother to keep her from having unsuitable suitors. However, Hades the Lord of the Underground found Proserpina and kidnapped her. Demeter became so despondent that she allowed everything on Earth to die. Zeus finally demanded that Hades return their daughter, as people on Earth were starving as the crops were all dying. Hades did return her, but found a loophole in which Proserpina had to return for a few months every year to be with him in the underground. During these few months in which Proserpina is with Hades, Demeter becomes despondent and shuts everything off on Earth and thus was the creation of Winter, the season where nothing will grow.
