The scene depicts the moment in time when Joseph was having his dream or vision as told in the Bible in Matthew Chapter 2 Verse 13. When the Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said "And when the wise men were departed, behold, the Angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him. This painting was most likely created during Meng's Florentine period. It came directly into the possession of the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo.
