Ashby Hall was the second dormitory to be built by the State Teachers College now JMU. This dorm was built in 1911 and was known for several years as simply Dormitory #2, it was built to handle the growing enrollment of the college which by this time was up to 300 students. In addition to student living space this dorm also provided a basketball court and a badly needed gymnasium complete with Indian Clubs and dumbbells. Today Ashby Hall is still used for student living with a lab located in the basement. Picture #163 an original archival scenic print by Brandywine General Store.
