This oil on canvas measures 27 9/16 by 21 5/8 inches in size and now hangs at the Getty Center in Los Angeles California. Poised to write God's words, St. John looks upwards for divine inspiration, which he receives as a brilliant light. St. John was the fisherman from Galilee who became one of Christ's Apostles and is traditionally considered the author of the Gospel according to John and also the Book of Revelations from the Bible. This canvas was completed by Frans Hals sometime during the period of 1625 to 1628. The artist, Gerard Hoet was the first recorded owner of this artwork, then was bought by Catherine the Great, empress of Russia, in 1773 when it was placed in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg. In 1812 the painting was transferred to a Church on the Crimea. Soetheby's sold this painting anonymously in 1997 when it was purchased by the J. Paul Getty Museum.
