An archival premium Quality art Print of Bottle of Anis del Mono by Juan Gris for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist finished this oil and graphite on canvas in the year 1914. In this work the artist experiments with truth and illusion of representation using elements from daily life, such as this anisette bottle. Gris cuts out and displaces the label transforming Anisado into Visado and places the medals of Paris and Madrid facing each other as a symbol of the city of his birth and his city of adoption. The contrast is underlined by the cutting from the news paper, Le Journal, which that day discussed the polemical law on compulsory military service. These displacements are used by the painter to refer to his unstable situation as a foreigner in France, especially considering he had evaded military service by leaving Spain and coming to France. Juan Gris never had formal training in the cubist arts and was usually not accepted in these circles, however he has had the last laugh as some of his works now bring in the tens of millions of dollars.
