A Museum Quality Print of Purification of the Temple by El Greco. The Greek artist finished this oil on canvas sometime around the year 1600 with the size of the original artwork being 16 1/2 by 20 5/8 inches. El Greco painted many examples of this subject in his workshops, this one is the Frick canvas and is thought to be one of the later examples painted by El Greco. The subject of Christ driving the traders and money changers from the Temple assumed special significance during the Counter Reformation as a symbolic reference to the purification of the Church from heresy. The figures in this painting are divided into two groups. At the left are the frightened sinners while on the right are the believers quietly observing the scene.
