A Museum Quality Print of Niagara Falls from the American Side by Frederic Edwin Church for sale by Brandywine General Store. This large canvas captures the drama of Niagara Falls and was commissioned by New York Art dealer, Michael Knoedler in 1866. The size of the original artwork was 257 by 227 centimeters and now resides at the National Gallery of Scotland. Church based this painting on drawings and a sepia photograph that he made when he went to view the falls in 1856. The high dropoff of the water from the top to the bottom is evident in this picture as is the steep rocky cliffs to the side while in the bottom right corner is a rainbow that was made from the water vapors in the sunshine. In between the waterfalls is a pool of deep clear blue waters. Church was selected to represent the United States at the Universal Exhibition in Paris and this painting might originally have been for this expo. In 1887 it was bought by John S. Kennedy who gave it to his native Scotland, making it the only major work of art in an European public collection.
