The artist finished this painting around 1520 and the original is now in the Imperial Collection. The painting shows Emperor Maximillian I, his first wife, Mary of Burgundy who is next to their son, Philip the Fair who had died in 1506. Below them are Philips sons, Charles in the middle and Ferdinand on the left. The child on the right is Louis of Hungary whom Maximillian had adopted in 1515. This was most likely painted on the occasion of the First Congress of Vienna which occurred in 1520, the painting has been in the Imperial Collections since the 1690s. The inscriptions throughout the portrait identify the Emperor and his family as members of the family of Mary Cleophas, who had been venerated as one of the sisters of the Virgin Mary. Emperor Maximillian was king of the Germans from 1486 until his death in 1519, he was also named Holy Roman Emperor in 1508 even though he was never personally crowned by the Pope because the trip to Rome was to dangerous for Maximillian to make.
