Dahl, Johan Christian - Birch Tree in a Storm
A Museum Quality Print of Birch Tree in a Storm by Johan Christian Dahl for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist finished this oil on paper laid on cardboard in the year 1849. The size of the original artwork is 8 1/2 by 7 inches. This single, heroic tree stems from seventeenth-century prototypes by Jacob van Ruisdael, who was in turn deeply influenced by his fellow Dutchman Allart van Everdingen, the first painter of Norway’s wild scenery. Dahl painted the present picture in 1849, as a variant of a larger one of the same year. Although both works seem to be based on a nature study Dahl had made in Germany in 1823 (Nasjonalgalleriet, Oslo), they are intended to evoke the landscape of Norway.
