However de Coninck lived from 1644 to 1701, so most of his artworks would date from the last quarter of the 17th century. In this painting a rooster is standing watch over the barnyard, even as a wildcat is coming in to kill something for supper. The rooster is not backing down, he will fight to the death. A basket of what looks like blackcocks are taking off while rabbits are walking around, oblivious to the imminent danger.
