An archival art print of The Bathers, painted by Paul Cézanne over the period of approximately 1894 to 1905. Cézanne returned repeatedly to the subject of bathers throughout his career, drawing on memories of his idyllic youth swimming in the River Arc near Aix-en-Provence. He worked simultaneously on three large bather canvases during this period; the other two are now held at the Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Barnes Foundation in Merion, Pennsylvania. In these works, Cézanne reinterpreted the centuries-old tradition of nude figures in landscape, referencing old masters such as Titian and Poussin. When The Bathers were exhibited in 1907, they proved transformative — Picasso and Matisse studied them closely, and the works are widely credited as a catalyst for the Cubist movement.
