The painting depicts Empress Catherine the Great strolling with her favorite dog in the park at Tsarskoye Selo. Borovikovsky portrays her in an unconstrained and intimate pose — more grandmotherly than imperial — presenting her as a person of the people rather than the ruler of Russia. In the background stands the Chesme Column, a monument commemorating three Russian naval victories in the Russo-Turkish War of 1768–1774.
