The artist painted this work for in the dining room of his friend, Albert Courtier of Meaux. Caillebotte was a loyal and rich member of the Impressionist Group of artists in France. He bequeathed his extensive art collection to the state of France where it became the nucleus of the Impressionist art collection now in the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. The composition shows a close up view of colorful fruits stacked on a market stand creating a bold pattern of repeated forms and colors. Some of the fruits that are visible in the painting are blueberries, grapes, plums, oranges, tomatoes, pears, apples and oranges, which make a very striking and colorful display.
