These plates are to be attached to each side of the vessel, or in front and back, so that they are plainly visible at all times. They must be placed so that any tarpaulin or other covering will not obscure them at any time. Boat plates must be obtained every year. They are required on all boats 16 feet or longer which use the Great Lakes or waters that connect with the Great Lakes. All motor boats in Michigan must be registered - puddle jumpers and 75 foot pleasure yachts alike. Registration is in three year cycles. MC numbers are assigned when the boat is registered.
