The tall skyscrapers of the downtown area are shown in the center of the composition while the front is full of the myriad of roads that are crossing over each other and going in and around the city. Houston is the largest city in Texas and the 4th largest of the Nation. Two brothers, John Kirby and Augustus Allen, who made their fortune in New York real estate founded Houston in 1836 on the banks of the Buffalo Bayou. The siblings purchased 6,500 acres with the intentions of creating their own city and they named this city after General Sam Houston who had fought and won the Battle of San Jacinto. In 1837 the new town of Houston was incorporated. Shipping was the first business to be promoted by the brothers and by 1860 the city had become a railroad hub, which then allowed Houston to serve as a hub for the export of cotton to Europe. The growth of this city has been on a straight up trajectory ever since. Picture #83 a geographic print made from a photograph in the Highsmith Collection.
