An archival premium Quality art Print of Rapids on the Hudson River by Winslow Homer for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist finished this watercolor on rough texture ivory paper in 1894 with the original artwork now at the Art Institute of Chicago. It is signed in the lower left margin in pen with brown ink "Hudson River June 1894 W. H." while on the verso is written "M. K. W. C. 1018 The Rapids Hudson River Adirondacks". When Winslow began visiting the Adirondacks in the 1870s, commercial logging was beginning to destroy large tracts of forest and clogging the rivers. He observed and recorded these events with his watercolors, rarely passing judgement on these matters. In The Rapids, the artist combines the themes of logging and fishing. On the far bank is the only evidence of man with the logs laying on the riverbank with the subtle reference to a fisherman, who is invisible, but you can see his line being cast into the river. The artist used his knife blade to sketch the paint from the canvas to show the fishing line in mid cast. Otherwise this watercolor is peaceful and tranquil with the river's motion and blue waters running over the submerged rocks and the rapids in the left part of the picture.
