SKU: Old Masters #79

A Museum Quality Print of Children's Games by Pieter Breugel the Elder for sale by Brandywine General Store. This oil on panel was completed by the Flemish Renaissance artist in 1560. The size of the original artwork is 46 by 63 inches. It has been thought that this painting was one example in a series of artworks representing the Ages of Man, in which this example would have stood for youth. However if this was Breugel's intention then he painted no more in the series, or the others have been lost through the passage of time, because no others have surfaced. The children in this composition range in age from toddlers to adolescents. They are rolling and spinning hoops, walking on stilts, riding hobby horses, playing leaf frog and blind man's bluff, performing tricks such as handstands, inflating pig's bladders and playing with dolls and other toys. In the upper corner are even more children who are bathing in the river and playing on the bank. All in all, some 80 different games have been identified as being played by the children in this painting, making it a treasure trove for the study of medieval games. Breugel shows the children absorbed in their games with the seriousness displayed by adults in their apparently more important endeavors. Old Masters Paintings #79
