The original of this painting was painted by Vincent Van Gogh on June 16, 1890 in the small town of Auvers-sur-Oise, just six weeks before his suicide. The house in this oil painting is the one in which Van Gogh spent the last three months of his life, a period during which he painted over 75 different canvas's. The bright object in the night sky has been determined by astronomers to be the planet Venus, enabling the close date on this art. This painting has had a difficult history, it disappeared for a period of about 50 years during World War II and then was found in the storerooms of the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, where it still resides today.
