Van Gogh Vincent - Self Portrait with a Straw Hat Fine Art Print
A Museum Quality Print of Self Portrait with a Straw Hat by Vincent Van Gogh. The artist finished this canvas of himself in the Summer of 1887 while in Paris. The size of the original oil on cardboard is 16 by 13 inches and now resides at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Van Gogh was interested in the human face much more so than the other Impressionist artists of the era. After acquiring a good quality mirror, he started painting self portraits because it was hard for him to find setters or models to paint. This was how he practiced painting human faces, as he wanted to excel in portraiture. This self portrait is starting to show the artist's declining health. The 3/4 profile, deep shadows and tight mouth suggest a man suffering from physical and emotional stresses. He is dressed in a yellow straw hat and work coat of the peasant laborer, a costume he wore often befitting his self image as a working man's artist. He also has a full beard and two different colors of eyes, one being green and one blue.
