When the artist lived in Arles, France he was on the same street as the Roulin family. Van Gogh and Joseph Roulin became friends and the Roulin family was painted by Van Gogh in many different portraits. Van Gogh wrote his brother, Theo about his excitement over this modern portrait, a picture that renders character not by the imitation of the sitter's appearance but through the independent, vivid life of color.
