Joseph Roulin worked for the post office in the French town of Arles, having a high position job of sorting the mail at the train station. Van Gogh and Roulin lived on the same street in Arles and became close friends. Van Gogh painted over 20 portraits of Joseph and the Roulin family. Van Gogh wrote his brother, Theo about his excitement over this modern portrait, a picture that renders character not by the imitation of the sitter's appearance but through the independent, vivid life of color. Completed by the artist in 1888, two years prior to his suicide. We also have the companion print to this artwork, the Portrait of Madame Roulin available in both fine art print and poster style.
