Tulipa Gesneriana Double Bloom Botanical Print by Holtzbecher
A Museum Quality Botanical Print of the Tulipa Gesneriana with Double Bloom by the German artist Johannes Simon Holtzbecher. The exact date of the antique canvas isn't known, but it was painted by the artist sometime between the period of 1649 to 1659. This original gouache on Parchment measures 15 by 20 inches in size and is now at the National Gallery of Denmark. We have several different botanical paintings in the same size, era, medium and technique by this same artist, they make a nice grouping put together on a wall. You can type the artist's name in the search box and they will all come up. This painting by Holtzbecher is different than the rest we have listed in that it only shows one large flower instead of four or five, which was more normal for him to paint. This one shows a huge tulip with a large double red bloom at the top with five large buds on the rest of the stalk getting ready to bloom. This is an unusual tulip, not common to see these today. This artist painted this work not long after the tulip craze that hit Holland earlier in this century.
