An archival premium Quality art Print of The Sleeping Gypsy by Henri Rousseau for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist finished this oil on canvas in the year 1897 with the original now in the Museum of Modern Art being a gift by Mrs. Simon Guggenheim. This depiction of a lion musing over a sleeping woman on a moon lit night is one of the most recognizable artworks of modern times. Rousseau describes this work of art thus "a Wandering Negress, a mandolin player, lies with her jar beside her (a vase with drinking water), over come by fatigue in a deep sleep. A lion chances to pass by, picks up her scent, yet does not devour her. There is a moonlight effect, very poetic." Rousseau was a self taught French artist who painted in the naive or folk art style. He was a toll collector for the city of Paris until he was finally able to retire and devote his full energies to painting. Famous artists print #156
