Roosevelt, Franklin Delano White House Portrait by Frank O. Salisbury
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was our Nation's 32nd President who served from 1933 through 1945. He was our leader through the most trying times since Abraham Lincoln led us through the Civil War. He took office during the Great Depression with its high unemployment and bank closings and served through almost until the end of World War II. He implemented numerous work programs during the Depression to give the unemployed jobs and a little income to buy food and basic supplies. We entered World War II in 1941 when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. He was elected to an unprecedented 4 terms as President of the United States, a feat which will never be accomplished again, unless the Constitution is changed. He suffered from polio when he was younger and was unable to walk through most of his life. His health started declining and he died in 1945 before the War had ended. Harry S. Truman, his vice president, led the United States through the end of this great World War.
