Due to the harsh conditions and almost constant winds on the Dolly Sods, most of the red spruce trees only develop branches on one side, this picture shows that clearly. This whole plain where these trees are located is circled by rocks and huckleberry bushes, a few which were already turning red before summer even officially arrived.
