Manet produced this work during a period when he was influenced by Spanish Art. The old musician is a real person named Jean Lagrene who is getting ready to play the violin. In real life he was the leader of a local gypsy band, who earned his living as an organ grinder and artist's model. The man in the top hat is Colardet, a rag picker and ironmonger. Manet painted these characters from an area he called a picturesque slum. Famous Artists print #90
