Benjamin Franklin was the representative of the Revolutionary Government of the US to the French Court, France was out ally during the War with England. Franklin was already well known as a writer, scientist and businessman when he arrived in France in December 1776. Franklin was a huge success during his mission to France. The early owner of this portrait was Madame Brillon de Jouy, who was Franklin's neighbor in Passy, France and one of his favorite women in the country. He maintained a flirtatious relationship with this woman throughout his stay in France. Duplessis painted several different varieties of this portrait, another one shows Benjamin Franklin in a red coat.
