Dahl, Johan Christian - Winter Landscape Near Vordingborg Denmark
A Museum Quality Print of Landscape Near Vordingborg Denmark by J. C. Dahl. The artist finished this oil on canvas in the year 1829, it was a huge painting measuring 68 by 81 inches in size. The original artwork by Johan Christian Dahl now hangs in the National Gallery of Denmark. This is a somewhat oppressive atmosphere with undertones of death. Nature is shown in its icy winter garb, symbolically anchored in the stump left by the tree felled in the foreground, the naked lifeless branches of the two large trees and the grave behind them. It is an overall sense of days long past, never to return. In the far distance a figure with a long rifle and dogs, treads home where a warm cozy fire is waiting. He has most likely been out hunting in this harsh weather for a deer, squirrel or some other animal to eat. A few birds are scavenging in the foreground for food with some of the flock in the large trees and flying overhead waiting to find a good place to land before they too start their search for food in this cold desolate place.
