Crabapple Japanese Flowering in Full Bud Botanical Print by Houtte
A Fine Art Print of Crabapple Japanese Flowering in Full Bud by Louis van Houtte, this would be a good companion print to the the same tree painted by Houtte that is in full bloom, pictured elsewhere. Both of the crab apple prints were illustrations for Van Houtte's botanical journals The Flowers of the Gardens and Greenhouses of Europe published in the middle part of the 19th century. This tree is also sometimes known as the purple chokeberry and originated in Japan and East Asia. It is a round headed small deciduous tree with narrow leaves on the arching branches. This tree will grow to a height of 15 to 20 feet with a spread of 20 to 25 feet. Birds and wildlife are especially fond of this fruit and it also makes an excellent jelly. This picture was labeled by Van Houtte as "en boutons" which is French for in bud.
