The Greek artist finished this oil on canvas sometime during the renaissance period of 1587 - 92 with the size of the original artwork being 121 by 105 centimeters. El Greco was one of the first painters in Spain to depict the two Christian apostles, St. Peter and St. Paul together. In doing so, he was able to contrast the difference between the two men, St. Paul is devout and passionate while St. Peter is gentle and meek. The poses and gestures, the colors and expressions, the superb technique all emphasize the contrast between the two Saints. This painting was done during the high period of El Greco's creative life, a period during which he executed a whole series of works on the subject of Christ and the Apostles. Religious art print #63
