Greco, El - Christ on the Cross Art Print
An archival premium Quality Art Print of Christ on the Cross by El Greco for sale by Brandywine General Store. The Greek artist painted this oil on canvas sometime between the years 1600 to 1610 with the size of the original artwork being 32 1/2 by 20 5/16 inches. Isolated on top of a mountain, a gaunt, tormented Christ dominates a nearly empty landscape. On the road below him, which leads into Jerusalem, horsemen pass by and turn their backs on Christ. Turning his eyes towards Heaven, Christ looks away from the bones and skulls that lie at his feet on this hill of execution, representing his triumph over death. His tortured body is illuminated against the dark background, El Greco's dramatic use of color and proportions distorts the figure, conveying the moment when Christ sublimated his physical pain and commended his spirit to God. Few paintings attributed to El Greco are solely painted by the artist by himself, but rather with help in his workshops. However art historians believe this one can be attributed to the artist himself because of the bold handling of paint, the undulating contours and vigorous dashes, confirm that it was all completed in his own hand.
