The original of this small oil on pear wood painting measures 23 by 17.4 centimeters in size and now resides at the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square London England. This artwork is a double sided devotional painting, on the back is a scene with a heavenly body in a night sky. This most likely dates from the early period of Durer's career, from his first journey to Italy during the years 1494 to 1495. A very colorful landscape surrounds St. Jerome, with the spires of a Church barely visible on the left side and a large mean looking lion is directly behind the Saint.
