An archival premium Quality Art Print of an Equestrian Portrait of the Duke of Lerma for sale by Brandywine General Store . This painting was completed by Peter Paul Rubens in 1603 during his first trip to Spain. Francisco Gomez de Sandoval y Rojas lived from 1553 to 1625 and was a Spanish statesman of a noble family. He won the confidence of King Phillip III who in turn entrusted him with the conduct of public affairs in 1598 and then the following year 1599 made him the Duke of Lerma. In 1618 Pope Paul V appointed him as a Cardinal. Rubens shows the Duke in this portrait as Chief of the Spanish Armies, he is wearing half armor while riding a white steed and carries a ruler's staff. The scallop of the Knights of St. James at his neck is the only decorative element in this portrait. The military bearing of the picture is reinforced by the Cavalry battle raging in the background. After the Duke of Lerma fell from grace, this painting entered the Royal Collections, but was later given to the Admiral of Castile by Phillip IV. It passed through the collections of many noblemen before it was acquired by the Prado Museum in Madrid Spain in 1969. The brightness and vividness of the colors are spectacular, the painting must have received the utmost care during its long 400 year life, the paints look as fresh as they did when used.
