The artist finished this Late Renaissance style artwork around the year 1570. The original size is 78 by 46 inches and is now at the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square in London, England. St. Helena was the mother of Emperor Constantine, who receives divine guidance in her quest to discover the place where the True Cross, on which Christ was crucified, is buried. With this pictures dramatic cropping, its format and off balance composition, historians think this piece was painted as a decoration for an organ shutter.
