Washington, George Portrait by Robert Edge Pine
A Museum Quality Print of the Portrait of George Washington by Robert Edge Pine for sale by Brandywine General Store. The artist finished this oil on canvas in the year 1785. The size of the original portrait was 27 by 35 inches in size and now hangs in the Smithsonian Institute at the National Portrait Gallery. All artists all over the World wanted to paint the likeness of President George Washington after he defeated the British in the American Revolutionary War and became the first President of the new country of the United States. In this portrait he poses for the English artist Robert Edge Pine, you would have thought an English Artist would not have been welcome yet in the new country, but evidently this one was allowed to paint the Commander of the rag tag Army who defeated the British. Commander Washington is shown in this likeness wearing his Continental Army Uniform. He humorously commented "I am so hackneyed to the touches of the Painter's pencil, that I am now altogether at their beck, and set like patience on a monument".
