Van Gogh was trying to capture the essence of country and farm life, depicting a haystack, ladders, carts, a farmer with a pitchfork and the beautiful farm fields all ready for harvest. Montmajour, the fortified Benedictine monastery which was built between the 10th and 13th centuries, is in the background of this painting. This oil on canvas is now in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
