A Museum Quality Art Print of The Cottage Dooryard by Adriaen van Ostade. The original oil on canvas, painted in 1673, measures 17 by 16 inches in size and is now at the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. This artist was one of the most prolific in Haarlem. He painted daily life in rural villages, from bawdy tavern and barn scenes to more dignified portrayals. This is a peaceful domestic scene with a mother cleaning mussels as two of her children and the family dog play nearby. An older sister is entertaining the baby while the father stands in the doorway watching over this idyllic family scene. The clothes are drying on a line which is attached to the chicken coop with vines partially obscuring a dovecote. This family also has honey as two beehives are stored on a shelf above the water pump. The brick home is well maintained, suggesting that this family were not poor peasants.
