The composition shows a red throated hummingbird setting on a branch of an apple tree which is in full white and pink bloom. Heade used a lot of hummingbirds in his material around this time in his painting career. The oil on canvas was finished by the artist in 1875, measures around 12 by 14 inches in size and signed by the artist M. J.
